Chrome 107.0.5304.110 and Firefox 106.0.5 on MacOS 12.6 are failing to load the disk for this adventure game and returns the error:
Error: A network error occurred loading http://bbcmicro.co.uk/gameimg/discs/166 ... tonSTT.ssd
Issue seems to be in the URL:
If I change ti to the following it will work (change http to https and ...//gameimg... to .../gameimg...
Hope this helps.

I don't quite understand why those two need it when e.g. Electrobots Going Underground works with the same URL "issues":
Oh well... at least I have a workaround for the few non-working links.

Weird! What happens if you go to the Details page for Golden Baton and click the Play button manually?:

http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1660

That works for me in Chrome "107.0.5304.110 (Official Build) (arm64)" on macOS 12.6.1 on an M1 Mac.

OK... after some experimentation. It always fails in Incognito mode in Chrome / Firefox on MacOS. But in normal mode they all work. Seems that they are expecting https for the link to the SSD otherwise they throw that error.

Is it possible to change the code that generates the disc link is via https? I can change it manually but would save seconds from my life if it was fixed :D

I use Private/Incognito mode a great deal, just to stop cookies building up and obviously for tracking

Edit: It doesn't make sense why it would fail with http:// in Private/Incognito mode - do you get the same Lurkio?

No. I can go into Incognito mode in the aforementioned version of Chrome and go to the Details page for Golden Baton (the http:// version) and then click the Play button manually, and it works.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood your error report.

OK so curiouser and curiouser... in Firefox Private Browsing mode, the request is blocked because of the CORS policy on the main page (so guess it's hitting mixed origin because of the http:// rather than https://).

Wonder if this is a Firefox bug at a specific version/OS. Weird it accepts it on normal browsing mode.

Any reason why the site couldn't be updated to change to https:// for the game image? This peculiarity would just disappear.

The unavailability of the original developer of the site is one issue. The site is run by volunteers on a wing and a prayer(!), thanks to the efforts of several enthusiastic (but time-poor!) Stardotters and to the generosity of our hosting provider.

I am happy to change it in the original source code if there's a github repository somewhere Lurkio. Not my intention to create additional work for people, just trying to improve this to run in private browsing/incognito sessions.

Can you try again? I can’t remember what the details of this issue are, and I’m just rush-posting this right now, but Mark Moxon has recently been tweaking the way bbcmicro.co.uk handles http and https issues. Let me know if things are any better for you now.

Looks like it might be @Lurkio - early signs are good. I'll try tomorrow on my Macbook which is where I originally noticed the issue. The disk references in the URLs now look correct. Will report back (or tonight if I get a moment).

Appears to be fixed - that's excellent news! I private browsing/incognito so navigating to these doesn't pollute my browser history (only the important history is left there.

Thank you Mark Moxon and Lurkio!
