Kryoflux - ADFS F Format 1.6MB

Post by ScurvyGeek »

Hello all,

I'm currently imaging some old ADFS formatted floppy discs.

I have a setup using a Kryoflux and Mac OS X, with a fairly bog standard ALPS HD floppy drive.

I can capture 800KB ADFS "E" discs no problem, but I'm struggling to get anything at all when doing sector images of higher capacity 1.6MB floppies. The image files are 0KB.

For ADFS E I use MFM, extension "adf", Start track 0, End track 80, both sides, sector size 1024, sector count exactly 5, Track distance 80, target RPM 300.

This gives me a nice image I can load into RPCEmu.

For the F format, I use the same settings but sector count 10 and I get... nothing. Any ideas? The disks load normally in a RiscPC.

found some interseting stuff on Floppy formats here:

According to that the disc has to spin at 360 rpm (rather than 300) to achieve 1.6MB.

So as you say same settings except for sector count 10 and maybe try target RPM 360

Thank you both!

I've actually succeeded in recording the sector images, by utilising the floppy from the RiscPC. Whether or not this is because it's the original drive that wrote the disks, or because it's better quality (Sony vs ALPS) I don't know - but I have ADF images that I can load into RPCEmu.

Happy days!

Thanks for your support.

P.S. Will try again at 360rpm tomorrow, see if it's any more reliable as I still have a few bad sectors.
