Please forgive the stupid questions but I've no idea what zoom is and I'm wondering if there's a way I can just watch this. is it going to be on something like youtube or twitch? It just sounds very interesting but zoom is unknown to me, I'm guessing its a smartphone app thing? I don't have a phone. Just a desktop pc and laptop.

You mean you’ll not going to atomise your Atom in order to electronically send it over the Zoom interweb so that it can materialise right in front of us?
I’m disappointed....

Zoom is a video conferencing system. It’s available for Windows 10, Linux, MacOS systems and for mobile devices like Apple iPhones/iPads and Android devices. Obviously we won’t be able to see you if your device does not have a camera, and we won’t be able to hear you if your device does not have a suitable microphone.Steve8bit wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 10:05 pm Please forgive the stupid questions but I've no idea what zoom is and I'm wondering if there's a way I can just watch this. is it going to be on something like youtube or twitch? Their web site is here. You don’t have to register to take part, but you do if you want to use a profile picture and for other features. Their support page is here.
Some of the talks will be made available at a later date as a video, some of which do make it to YouTube. But not all, as the special guests have to agree to being recorded. And you can’t ask them questions. Unlike in a live and interactive environment that Zoom offers.

Could you add me to the reserve list? I can only make the Repton3 source code preservation talk (tentative) and the BBC MicroBot talk (definite), but would love to attend those if possible.

Hi James, yes I'd already added you on Monday night after our Messenger IMs.

I've allocated you the fifth and final 'reserve' spot, as it wasn't clear whether you wanted to attend via Zoom. Please let me know if otherwise. Thanks.Steve8bit wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 10:05 pm Please forgive the stupid questions but I've no idea what zoom is and I'm wondering if there's a way I can just watch this. is it going to be on something like youtube or twitch? Thank you Arcadian, I really do appreciate the offer but after checking up on zoom, I've decided it's not for me as with no camera or mic it would be rather pointless and better to give my space to someone who can make the most of it, sorry if I caused any problems.
Re: NOW FULL! All-day 'Virtual' Acorn session #12, Saturday 6th March 2021, 9am - midnight
Saturday will practically be wall-wall talks - so logging in without camera or mic certainly wouldn't be a problem - I imagine many others will be doing the same. If you wish to ask questions to the presenters you can do so in the Zoom chat (due to time constraints, this may well be the norm for all QAs this weekend i.e. field questions via the Presenters using Zoom chat opposed to asking in person via voice/video).Steve8bit wrote: ↑Wed Mar 03, 2021 9:29 pm Thank you Arcadian, I really do appreciate the offer but after checking up on zoom, I've decided it's not for me as with no camera or mic it would be rather pointless and better to give my space to someone who can make the most of it, sorry if I caused any problems.
So can I keep you on the reserve list, Steve?
(I'm optimistic I'll be able to send out invites to those on the reserve list too, but won't be able to confirm until Friday pm when I've had some responses back from former and potential future guest speakers whom I've also contacted),

Please note the 1.30pm and 3pm talks have now been swapped around.
0xC0DE will now cover Elementum and Electrobots at 1.30pm whilst Graham Sanderson will demo his Beeb Emu for the Pi Pico at 3pm.
I'll update the slide later today....

Just to follow up, and in case it's useful, here is some info one attendee previously provided about how to connect to Zoom without a camera or mic:
Here is some information about using Zoom without a microphone, which might also be useful for other people. When the ‘Speak and pause, do you hear a replay?’ query is displayed, simply select ‘Yes’ anyway, then select ‘Join with Computer Audio’. If instead the users reply ‘No’, without a microphone they will become caught in an infinite loop at that point.

Goodness, what an incredible day that was. Bit exhausting, but WELL worth it!
Was aware of the comments buzzing around beforehand about the "quality" of this month's line-up and I certainly think (and hope) expectations were met, mainly due to the contributions from so many *bloody talented* people.
Thanks in particular to:
Finally, I tweeted several live updates to Twitter throughout the day from the @RetroSoftwareUK Twitter account (please follow it if you can!). Not everyone here will be on Twitter so I've attached screengrabs below, to whet your appetites for when the videos are finally ready to go online ...

- simoni and 1024MAK for tech work, markjw for hosting the schedule and recording backup video along with crowly and andrewvideo (thanks Andrew for the valuable Zoom tips!)
- acp for providing Matthew Atkinson's source discs for preservation (and Chris/Phil again for the mind-boggling restoration work)
- Kecske Bak for contributing during Matthew's talk
- pixelblip for graffiti'ing Elementum
- IanS for being a superstar
- Mark from idesine.com for his help lining up guest talks

- anyone else I've forgotten (disclaimer: I'm /very/ tired!)

Thanks everyone for a great day, I found it very tiring and I wasn't even an organiser.
Re: All-day 'Virtual' Acorn session #12, Saturday 6th March 2021, 9am - midnight
A big thankyou to Dave (Arcadian) who as ever, went the extra mile to organise, plan, research, do loads of slides for .. another great Virtual Acorn session.. and of course to all the presenters and admins that put aside their time to give some great talks!
I wasn't able to be online throughout but look forward to the recordings.
These events can take a lot of prep. and so if you feel you are able to help Dave out with , for example.. creating slides/comms with presenters etc. I know that he would appreciate it.
Cheers,
jbnbeeb
