Which BBC DFS

Post by e668ecp »

Selling another of my BBC's and pondering whether to keep the 1770 that it currently has or swap it to an 8271 with and Acorn DFS 0.9

Which would you keep and why

It's something of nothing really, but I always thought that the "definitive" setup for a Model B was the 8271 and Acorn DNFS 1.2, so that's what I'd keep if it were me.

Also, I would imagine that 8271's are a lot more expensive to get hold of than 1770s.

0.9 is buggy. 1.2 is better. Personally I'd stick with the 1770 though - it's rather better behaved with 3.5" drives!

http://mdfs.net/System/ROMs/Filing/DNFS/ :)

300 is the vanilla one, the others I think have slight tweaks to either fix a bug or fix the timing with 3.5" drives.

Thanks.. decided to leave the machine as it was with the 1770 in. Have ordered an EPROM eraser and once here i'll wipe some old Amcom e-net roms (as i've loads) and then burn the Acorn DNFS 1.2 onto one and another Disk Doctor onto another

I think you'll find that E-net is only 8K so will likely have loads of 2764's. Acorn DNFS 1.2 is 16K so will require a 27128. Disc Doctor is only 8K so you should be good for that.

DFS1.2 won't work with a 8271FDC, so still require DFS2.26 (also 128/16k) if leaving the 1770FDC present

Decided to keep the 8271's and leave the 1770 in the machine that is going

So which versions of Acorn's DFS work with the 8271?

I think you've got that the wrong way around: DFS 1.20 does work with the 8271 FDC.

There is a nice summary of all the known DFS versions for the 1770 / 1772 floppy drive controller chips here. Or if you want more detail, use this.

Basically DFS 0.XX and DFS 1.XX are only for use with the 8271 FDC.
DFS 2.XX versions are only for use with the 1770 / 1772 FDC.

Curiously, the first linked article skips over all the 1.x versions :?

What I meant is that the machine i'm selling will stay with the 1770 I got it with.. I was going to change it to an 8271 + Acorn 0.9 DFS which I have lying around as spare and keep the 1770 as I don't have one of those. However I've decided the machine will retain the 1770 that it currently has
