I also can't speak for Kieran, but I'm sure he'd agree that having a starting point of some existing source code + graphics for a game (even if its a different platform/language) is a significant motivator + boost for getting something going.
I have a ton of respect for folks that create new or homage games without any source code to work from, because it's a whole different challenge.

one of the best games of th 80'.... and perhaps the best 8bit version !
