You need Phills RAMROM board to load roms.
Roms are loaded at #7000 and switched to #Axxx.

Or roms can manually load at #Axxx if you have RAM at #Axxx.

That was actually fixed back in December:

The fix will be in the V11 final release.

Hi all,

Version 11 - Updated 12/05/2020 - 217 New or Updated Titles

Just a quick note to say V11 of Atom Software Archive is available now in github:
https://github.com/hoglet67/AtomSoftwar ... ses/latest

There have been 217 additions / updates since V10, including an amazing 200 AGD conversions by Kees.

Full details are in the release notes on github.
V11 Release Notes

Thanks also to Kees for helping out with testing over the last couple of days.

Going forward, I'm planning to adopt a more increment release strategy, with point releases (V11.1, V11.2 etc) a bit more regularly, whenever there are significant additions, or even just when bugs are fixed.

There are more of nice non-games programmes on the archives of the Dutch Atom User Group. There is a nice and easy to use database program but also a chemistry program called Titratie. And what about Superdraw for drawing large images...

Wim, you could have a browse through Atom News and submit the best programs also to the Atom Software Archive. That would really be a great contribution!

Now & then I take some time (a few days) to go through some floppies & tapes which I received years ago every time when I "bought" a Atom... :D

I've already seen more nice things to share... :D (to be continued)

There are a few strange effects like the Yin/Yang logo, that it completely filled and IMHO one half should stay black. Also the scroll to right page leaves a lot of traces. It needs a little bit adjustment.

Great work on V11. I've updated JSATOM to include the latest archive V11.

I've also added an option to load an SDCard from the menu. It works directly with ZIP files from the archive.

The programs I've tested seem to work.

Hi Dave

I have downloaded version V11 of the software archive with a view to transferring it to an SD card for viewing via the AtoMMC as before.

The programmes are all in folders. Do I transfer them to the SD card with the programmes retained in the folders or do I have to transfer only the programmes by taking them out of the folders?

Regards

John

You need to leave the folder structure exactly as it is.

Just unzip the ZIP file into the root of the SD Card.

An extra note: if you did change some files that are also in the Archive then those will be overwritten (of course). I always make a backup of my card before installing the new files ... just in case ....

I do sometimes mess with files in the /MANPAGE or /SYS folders. But normally I place my own files in my own directories so they won't be affected by a new Archive installation.

roland wrote: Wed Jun 10, 2020 9:00 pm I also installed the latest software archive on my Yarrb'd computer and pressing the R does indeed load the Yarrb files. However, when the Atom is reset (also after loading the stuff) the register at #BFFE still contains 6. Typing ?#BFFE=#10 (selecting operating system in RAM) will still hang the Atom. It turns out that the operating system is not loaded into RAM. It is loaded into memory at #4000 - #FFFF but in the end it's not copied into the RAM at #C000-#FFFF. It's a fault in the file /SYS/YARRB.

Can you change line 440 to: LINK #3C00 in the next archive update? That will fix this issue. I discovered this while writing a Yarrb manual.
I've updated this in the archive, and also updated AtoMMC to 3.01 (which makes it obvious that you are running the OS from RAM).

Here's the updated /SYS folder:

If there are any other ROM changes needed, or any MAN updates, we can easily add them.

I was browsing through some of the Computing Today magazine scans on the Flaxcottage site when I noticed this Computer Concepts ad for Atom Software:

Image

It lists three titles:
  • Softscreen
  • Invaders
  • Alarm Clock and Sound Effects (two programs)
I don't think any Computer Concepts items are featured either in the Atom archive or on the missing list, so can they be added to the sheet/MIA forum post? ...

Thanks for this Dave, you are right these titles weren't known to exist.

I've updated the spreadsheet and updated the earlier post in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=44&t=6544&p=63715#p63715

Softscreen gets a mention in the Feb 1984 issue of Acorn User (page 154) review of Alan Knowle's Screen ROM (which we have):
This Atom Screen ROM comes as a 4k
EPROM, with a 4-page set of printed
instructions and two demonstration pro-
grams (in listing form). It is based on an
original program (‘Softscreen’), published
as a cassette about two years ago by
Computer Concepts. It is made available
with the full knowledge and consent of CC,
and Alan has considerably improved and
added to the original.
So it seems that SoftScreen was an earlier non-ROM based version of this.

They also get a mention in Your Computer, July 1982, page 32 (Survey: Atom Software):
https://archive.org/details/your-comput ... 1/mode/1up
Computer Concepts

SPACE invaders seems to be a standard
exercise for novice programmers — well here
is yet another version from a new company in
the field. The file-name, charmingly, is
Invaers (sic) and it costs £7.50 with instruc-
tions. These instructions deal with saving high
scores and redefining the invader characters.
The review copy of the program over-ran the
end of the tape.

Softscreen — 6K and 6K, £11 .40 — is, as the
name implies, a utilities program. It brings the
Atom quite a useful way towards having BBC
facilities — a 40-character line, definable
characters, and text windowing are offered, as
arc many of the BBC control codes/VDU
drivers. Full instructions and demonstration
are included.

Computer Concepts also have, on one £4.95
cassette with instructions, Alarm Clock and
Sound Effects. These are 2K machine code
routines which work on an Atom with VIA
and Link 2. Alarm Clock is an interrupter kept
out of the way of your main program but able
to interrupt when set. Load and Save halt the
clock; Break stops it. Sound effects is also a
machine-code utility, with particularly diffi-
cult instructions. It is designed to allow one to
program notes with great flexibility; but I
suspect that in practice the trouble may be too
much.
Thanks for finding these!

(Thanks to BigEd for promopting this research)

Now that most issues early issues of Personal Computer World are now available online, we can add a few more programs to the archive. This page is just my notes on what's available, and what's worth adding. My starting point was the index here.

"Missile Dodge" by Stuary Johnson (may81)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 4/mode/2up

This is a small game.

TODO: Type this in!

"Four-Stroke Cycle" (jul83)

This PCW Issue is missing (but Rev has a copy)

TODO: Scan the Atom article.

"Backgammon" by Peter Robinson (feb83)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 2/mode/2up

Large game.

Several versions in Roland's archive; this looks most accurate cf the listing:
./games1/BACKGAM.bas

TODO: Add this version.

"Atom Ghost Maze" by A S Whittington (sep83)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 8/mode/2up

Large game.

One version in Roland's archive:
./Acl1-06/GHOST.bas

Code: Select all

TODO: Add this version.
"Atom Filer" by C J Hollyman(oct83)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 6/mode/2up

This is a utility for creating named data files; probably won't include it.

"Atomforth Decompiler" by Adrian Taylor (oct83)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 8/mode/2up

This is a utility for decomiling forth programes; probably won't include it.

"Decision Maker" by Ben Rubenstein (nov83)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 6/mode/2up

This is basically just a sorting program; probably won't include it.

"Turbo" and "Cakes" by Russell Wheeler (feb84)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 0/mode/2up

Two small games.

TODO: Type these in!

"Footprints" by Peter Robinson (feb85)

https://archive.org/details/PersonalCom ... 2/mode/2up

This is significant strategy game. It's long, but worth trying to add.

TODO: Type this in!

Catalog Notes

BACKGAMMON is already in the archive, wrongly attribute to Bug Byte; delete this version
GHOST MAZE is already in the archive, in the non-commercial chapter

Here's another submission to the archive, from Dave (Arcadian).
AtomDisassembler-Bugbyte_Inlay.jpg
It's the "Missing in Action" Bug-Byte Disassembler:

This was a bit of a challenge to extract; Dave made four seperate .WAV files, at different volumes, and with "Compute Mode" on the Kisho tape recorder on and off. From these difference recordings we were able to piece together enough good blocks to reconstruct the original basic programs.

As a final sanity check, I re-saved the program and made sure the block checksums matched the original blocks, which they did:

Re: Atom Software Archive

Post by TheCorfiot »

Merry Christmas all

I have the latest core downloaded to my MiSTer FPGA system, created the AcornAtom folder in the Games directory and proceeded to create a boot.vhd file containing the archive but for the life of me cant get it to run. keep getting the Not Ready error..

Does anyone have a compiled vhd ready or can help me create a suitable one please

Many Thanks
