New music conversion - Castlevania III

Post by SarahWalker »

It's been a couple of years or so, must be time for a new music conversion. Today's ABUG release is Castlevania III : Dracula's Curse, or to be more precise Akumajō Densetsu, as this is the Famicom version that's been converted. This has an additional sound chip in the cartridge, adding an extra 3 voices in addition to the standard 5 voices on the NES/Famicom. This conversion implements 7 of these (as CV3/AD doesn't use the triangle wave), implementing 4 pulse waves, 1 sawtooth, 1 noise and 1 sample playback.

This conversion needs a Master 128, the dreaded ADFS, and banks 4 and 5 of SWRAM to be available. It mixes 7 voices at 10 kHz on the standard sound chip. Real hardware is recommended, with some kind of external amplification as the internal speaker isn't massively loud.

Enjoy!

Great work Sarah! It was lovely to hear this on real hw at ABUG. :) Sounds amazing, like a real arcade machine and nothing like a Beeb! =D>

Dig out an old Master and managed to get through the first three tracks before the caps went pop :oops:

But what I heard was stunning, amazing work Sarah - does this open the door to a whole library of NES music conversions? Or is there a fair degree of work involved to convert each track?

This sounds like a valid excuse for me to go and buy a Master from eBay. :D

Is there a chance that someone could post a Youtube Video showcasing these songs on the Beeb?
I don't have a Beeb, but would love to hear the tunes.

Sounds good! But.... should BeebEm or BEm in M128 mode load this? I get a disc error 18.

It's an ADFS disc so you need to do a SHIFT-A-BREAK.

Struggling to run this on a Master.

I’ve copied the file across to the cf card on my data centre;

I have swram banks free, but *castlevani results in nothing happening, and ch.”castlevani” brings up this garbled screen:

Any ideas?
