Micro User Magazines

This is where we keep track of who is scanning what, so we can avoid duplicating work and also define conventions/standards etc

Micro User Magazines

Post by sabre150 »

I have the following magazines that are currently on scanning projects, each issue is being saved as PDF file.

Micro User - Complete set, think my scans are much better quality and are curently half the size as what's currently available, the process at the moment takes about 4 hours to scan a 100 page magazine, but have also saved each scanned page as an image.

Micro_User_v1_n1_March_1983 23,757 KB 80 pages
Micro_User_v1_n2_April_1983 29,911 KB 104 pages
Micro_User_v1_n3_May_1983 30,322 KB 104 pages

Will update as each issue is complete, is it possible to post images on this forum?

Yep, sabre - you can add about 10 images per post. I assume you're not planning on posting all the scans here, though, as I'll wager those files will be huge!

If you're wanting somewhere to distribute the full scans (here's hoping), we can definitely find some space for them. I'm away for a week, but if you want to drop me a PM next week for a chat, that'd be cool.

join ifile.it, this allows files to sit forever, not like other upload sites that delete themselfs after 1month , then post links here.

Geoff - are you familiar with FTP software? If so, I could PM you FTP details which would enable to temporarily upload the files to our server).

I notice you've followed the naming convention on TAPP, so if you scans are better quality, I could simply overwrite the current PDFs with your versions.

Would you also be able to upload individual images? (preferably lossless PNG @ 300 dpi).

Yes I'm very familiar with FTP software, please do PM me the details, I could upload one scanned magazine as an example so you can compare to what's currently available.

Yes of course following the naming convention on TAPP, maybe a slight variation, when scanning a magazine in there is a particular process that I use, my current jpeg images are 1622 pixels in width and 2331 pixels in height, the average size is about 3MB, is there a limitation on the size of each image both in pixel size and file size when uploading, when scanning the magazine I scan at 400 dpi to get a good quality scan, for those people who's eye sight may not be as good as others, when you zoom in you will still be able to view at a good quality, then the images are reduced once the magazine has been convereted to PDF file format.

Would also be able to upload a set of images from one magazine as an example.

I have a number of Acorn User magazines issues that I have still missing, is anyone able to help so that I'm able to complete the set ready for scanning.

Are you planning to do *all* the Micro Users? That would be brilliant!!! At the moment I have about 80 issues or so of them climbing the walls and I desperately want to get rid of them without going through the trauma of scanning them all in (which would be exhausting stuff!).

The Micro User magazines are not available at the moment, awaiting access to the ftp website which should not take too long, will of course post once available.

If anyone has a copy of The Micro User below, as this magazine needs to be re-scanned so that the images from each page can be saved, Micro User storage DVD damaged.

To be fair, I thought these projects were complementary. Dave E has already released his cracking set of magazine scan DVDs for sale, but I thought sabre150 was delivering a set of scans that could be hosted online freely, which may be more convenient and certainly appreciated by those who don't have the disposal income to spend on DVDs.

On that subject, where are you actually storing your scans at the moment, sabre150? Did you get yourself sorted with an FTP site, or would you like me to set you something up?

You can get Archive on a DVD from here http://www.archivemag.co.uk/ not sure how many you get on there, but I would imagine it's most of them.

Risc User was available on a CD-ROM from R Comp Interactive, called Foundation Risc User (in a nutshell) all the issues where on there, not sure if it's still available.

Dave_E has scanned in everything else apart from Beebug.

(Also I haven't been home for almost two years; probably time!)

@Chris, did you get any more of TMU?

I've just looked at the covers (on your site  ), and from memory I do mind the missing 1991 to Oct'92 (my sub ran out then, it never got renewed as all Arc stuff  )

if you still require, I can confirm in a fortnight, and lift them for you \:D/

but if you don't (please let me know within fortnight), they can stay there for another 22 years

What's the status on The Micro User scans? I have a load of physical issues which aren't available as scans on 8bs.com. I emailed Chris but no reply. acornpreservation.org seems to be dead - is whatever was there available anywhere else? Are there any other freely downloadable archives of the mag?
