Emerald Isle Graphics

Post by melchett »

I recently downloaded Emerald Isle from the BBC Micro archive on this site but it doesn't appear to display any pictures - I have a vague memory that this game does include them and the instructions even say that if you type PICTURES it should display them at each location. Is this an emulation problem (BeebEm 1.41)? Does the version included in the archive include graphics? I've also tried versions from the BBC Games Archive and BBC Lives! but with similar non-graphical results <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

It could be only the BBC Master version has graphics. I can't speak from experience as I only played the BBC B version and would have switched off the graphics anyway.

How do you get the game to work?

I've tried the disk version from this archive but it dies after loading and the tape version has a corrupt file that won't load.
I couldn't get the archive version to work either initially until I found this post in the problems forum (courtesy of 'bbcfan'):

"I have had a look at this problem using Watford DFS 1.30 and 1.44. From what I understand, the DIR and LIB are changed from the standard $.

I have done a quick fudged fix as follows

PAGE=&6000
LOAD"ISLE"
DELETE 90,206 (Instructions)
221 *DIR $
222 *LIB $
*SAVE ISLE 6000+CFF 6000

When the disc image is next booted, the new ISLE will be CHAINed and the game should run (tested on BEEBem BBC Model B, Watford DFS 1.44)
The instructions are deleted as ISLE isn't just a BASIC file, and if the BASIC code goes for too long, the assembler will be overwritten.
If run in BBC Master mode, loads games but then Error 36C

Like I said, it is a fudged fix, but in the short term works. "

Thanks for the loading tip - works a treat.

To get the graphics to display press tab (I've checked and it works, just like on my proper beeb version).

Enjoy the game, I solved it many moons ago and I might just have another go for old time's sake.
Tried the TAB key and it works! Thanks for the tip (I knew the graphics were there somewhere...)

If anybody's interested, I've managed to get the game to work on 6502em.
From what I can tell they made it a split-screen affair using half of mode 7 and jumping to a reduced Mode5 for graphics. It doesn't quite work under emulation as there's a lot of garbage printed on the lower half of the text screen.

As an aside, it's strange really as this was the second L9 graphics adventure and before Red Moon yet Red Moon did not originally have graphics on the BBC Micro edition!

It was the Beebgames.com version by the way not the STH version.
