Gameboy Advance BBC Emulator

Post by melchett »

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this yet but a BBC emulator called Pocket Beeb has been written for the Gameboy Advance which can be downloaded from here:
(select Emulation from the left hand menu)

I have yet to play around this so don't know how good the emulation is although Exile apparently works (so the emulation must be pretty good).
Exile was the first game I got running! Seriously. Amazing *and* forgiving code they squeezed into those ~27kb!

Repton was next, which pushed me to fix the timers a bit better. Then Magic Mushrooms, which made me sort out channel 3 sound, then I just tried to get my favourites working when I got the itch. Volcano runs, which is something Beeb-Em can't do (just pulling legs here, I can't see what I do differently and the rest is like comparing oranges and ... um... stamps)

Speedwise, well it varies, some games are 90%, others are slower ,depending on how they fiddle with the hardware. There's something frustratingly not quite right with the timers (and occasionally key handling), which causes games to go slower than they should/could. And I've had to make speed hacks/accuracy culls all over the place.

Sound is good (well, IMHO) as the GBA's sound channels are surprisingly close to those of the Beeb.

Video - Modes 2 and 5 only I'm afraid. Teletext is a big fudge too, because I wasn't too fussed about loading or title screens. No fancy mid-screen mode changes here either... oh and the 240x160 GBA screen makes most games look *very* squashed.

Discs - the barest of bare minimums. They load most of the time, and that's what counts.

My first computer was an Acorn Electron, so obviously I'm delighted with the emulator
