Forum Software Upgrade

Post by danielj »

Let one go a bit prematurely there! Right - we are going to be upgrading the forum software. It will most likely take place this weekend and we will give you more than 30 minutes notice so you should have enough time to finish writing the chapter of War and Peace you were working on.

These are minor bugfixes, and shouldn't result in anyone's avatar going purple or your Acorn machines being replaced by ZX Spectrum +2s.

At least that's what it said on the packet... As suggested before, hold on to your knickers.

Any comments, please pop them in the feedback forum.

This will be taking place at 2pm UK time (UTC+1) tomorrow. Please try not to be posting around then! Hopefully we'll be back up and running very quickly.

10 minute warning! Make sure you're not writing any big posts (or if you are, do them in an editor!)

So you may notice that nothing's changed. That's because it didn't work and we've gone back to how we were. :|

After the update we got an error on the MCP page:

Illegal use of $_REQUEST. You must use the request class or request_var() to access input data. Found in /usr/home/stardot/incoming/stardot www/forums/mcp.php on line 34. This error message was generated by deactivated superglobal.

And the ACP pages were completely blank. We tried to figure out why this happened but it took too long so we decided to restore the old files and database. This restore didn't work via the web interface so we restored it on the command line. To make that work we had to increase the max_allowed_packet value in the /var/db/mysql/my.cnf file. After that all seems rights except DaveH's signature....

Hi,

This evening I performed a forum software upgrade on my test server. It went smoothly and without any errors. After the updates the board and control panels worked fine.

So I had a look at the log files of May 15:

Code: Select all

[Sun May 15 15:06:09.746418 2016] [:error] [pid 98843:tid 34984824832] [client 84.26.3.193:49878] PHP Warning: require(./../includes/acm/acm_file.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/home/stardot/incoming/stardotwww/forums/download/file.php on line 42, referer: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/adm/index.php?sid=b445c76dadcc76f98ce740a24a817f3d
[Sun May 15 15:06:09.746462 2016] [:error] [pid 98843:tid 34984824832] [client 84.26.3.193:49878] PHP Fatal error:  require(): Failed opening required './../includes/acm/acm_file.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/share/pear') in /usr/home/stardot/incoming/stardotwww/forums/download/file.php on line 42, referer: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/adm/index.php?sid=b445c76dadcc76f98ce740a24a817f3d
[Sun May 15 15:06:13.922170 2016] [:error] [pid 98843:tid 34984824832] [client 84.26.3.193:49877] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method phpbb\\template\\twig\\twig::set_custom_template() in /usr/home/stardot/incoming/stardotwww/forums/adm/index.php on line 54, referer: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/adm/index.php?sid=b445c76dadcc76f98ce740a24a817f3d

Those error messages are in the log so it looks that not all required file were uploaded. I cannot imagine why.

If you agree, I will try next Thursday, early in the morning to redo the upgrade to version 3.1.9. If anything goes wrong I can restore the old version and database (I now know how :) ). If the forum survives that upgrade we can have a look at the design and layout.

Greetings,
Roland
