Just worked it out myself: you have to enable a maximum of five RAM banks in B+ mode. Any more than five, and the game goes text-only.

Finally got it working! Thanks. Two questions: 
 
- The entire screen is often rather shaky. Is this normal? 
- The advice on *FX 255,15 (to speed up disk loading) doesn't seem to have any effect. Is this correct?

What configuration are you guys using? I can't get it to work with any Level 9 game with or without pictures <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Hi, can anyone tell me how to view the graphics in Gnome Ranger using Tom Seddon's emulator in B+ mode? I can only get the text-only version running.

Hi Blackjack Davy, 
 
The only way I have found to make this work is by doing the following (apologies if any of this is obvious but I thought it best to include all the instructions): 
 
1) Download Tom Seddon's Model-B emulator from here:

2) Start it up 
3) Select the "Options -> ROMs..." menu item 
4) Ensure that exactly four empty Paged ROM slots (i.e. they are empty if they don't have any text in the entry field) have their check boxes ticked. When I last tried this I had ROM slots 5,6,7 and 8 ticked. 
5) Click "Apply and Reset" 
6) Select "Options->Hardware" menu item 
7) Select the radio button for the "BBC Model B+" in the "Model" group 
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/glasses.gif ALT="8)"> Select the radio button for the "Opus 1770" in the "Disc Interface" group (I couldn't get the Acorn 1770 DFS to read the disk image!) 
9) Click "Apply and hard reset" 
10) You should now be at the standard B+ boot up screen, so load the game disk image - if you downloaded from StairwayToHell you should select "File->Drive 0->Load...". When the dialog appears, select your image called "GnomeRanger-GameDisk.ssd" and click the "Open" button 
11) Boot the disk image in the normal way i.e. press <SHIFT> and <BREAK> (<BREAK> maps to <F11> on your PC keyboard using the Model-B emulator) 
12) Enjoy... 
 
One other thing that might not be obvious to people playing this game, is that if the text pauses then press the <SHIFT> key to allow it to continue scrolling.
