CG Expo UK, July 24th & 25th (BBC Micros on show too!)

Post by Jeremy Grayson »

Hiya,

If you haven't seen it advertised elsewhere, here's a reminder for you all that the UK's first ever Computer Games Expo exhibition will take place at the Fairfield Hall, Croydon on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th of July. It's your chance to see the biggest assembly of retro games, vintage arcade machines, 1980s home computers etc ever brought together for one event in this country.

A retro games cinema will be showing the likes of Tron, War Games and Tomb Raider, there'll be a whole fleet of Sinclair C5s for people to test-drive, and retro computer and video games luminaries such as Matthew Smith (reclusive Manic Miner-creating genius) and the Oliver Twins (they of Dizzy fame) will be guesting all weekend, presumably to sign stuff and answer questions.

Speaking of Miner Willy, the event will see the grand unveiling of Mega Tree aka Miner Willy Meets the Taxman, the third "proper" part of the Miner Willy series long thought lost, but snapped up by the Expo organisers recently when co-author Stuart Fotheringham auctioned the sole surviving disk copies on Ebay.

No overview of the home computing scene of yesteryear would be complete without a BBC Micro presence, so myself, Chris and Gill Richardson (8bs), Crispin Boylan (BBC Games Archive) and Jonathan Harston (BBC-Micro mailing list regular, former Acorn User contributor etc.) are running a stall!

BBC Micro Games Resources (that's us) will be showing around half a dozen machines, including Model Bs, Masters and an Electron, all enabled to run yer favourite games of yore. We've already been inundated with requests for Elite, Repton 3, Frak!, Granny's Garden and plenty more besides to be running over the two days, and all other suggestions are welcome. We'll also have a wodge of games, books etc for sale and - if we can get it set up alright - Cris's PC blasting out MP3s of BBC games tunes for your aural pleasure! (unless it's the Repton 3 music, of course, which will just send you nuts inside of two minutes instead...)

Tickets for the event are available now at the CG EXPO website and are going fast. For details of these, plus news of the exhibitors, guests, etc, visit;
www.cgexpo-uk.com

Gamer TV from the UK will be in attendance all weekend, as will several other European TV and radio stations. Retro Gamer magazine is also rather enthusiastic about the event, as you might expect!

Hope this has whetted the appetite of some of you out there, we can't wait to see you all and show off our envied, matchless Planetoid prowess (yeah, right...)

Cheers for now!

Sounds great. Do you have a website for BBC Micro Games Resources?

Hiya,

There isn't a dedicated BBC Micro Games Resources website, rather the existing sites belonging to Chris and Cris (8bs.com and www.beebgames.com , of course). The name BBC Micro Games Resources was devised solely as an umbrella term for whosoever of us wanted to exhibit some Beebs and their games at the show.

What you MIGHT get afterwards, however, are some photos and other records of the weekend on 8bs, if Chris' intentions to record the event for posterity go according to plan, and if we look suitably ravishing enough on the footage...

Cheers,
