BBC Game Programming Books

Post by jon28 »

I was just clearing out a cupboard and found some old BBC game related programming books;

- How To Write Adventure Games by Peter Killworth
- Creative Assembler How To Write Arcade Games by Jonathan Griffiths
- Creating Adventure Programs On The BBC Micro by Ian Watt
- BBC Micro Assembler Workshop by Bruce Smith
- BBC Micro Assembly Language by Bruce Smith
- Assembly Programming Made Easy For The BBC Micro by Ian Murray
- Personal Computer News Sixty Programs For The BBC Micro

A few questions;

- Are they worth anything?
- Is anyone interested in them?
- Has anyone scanned any of them in yet?
- If not, would me taking them apart to scan them in properly by sacrilege?

I found a stack of other BBC books and manuals as well, though the above appear to be the more interesting ones.

Hi Jon, thanks for posting

You should definitely list Creative Assembler on eBay. I think a copy fetched approx £45 a month or two back!

I doubt you'd get anywhere near that amount for any of the others, mind ...

I recently compiled a list of all of the Advanced Programming/Assembler-type books that I could find in scanned format on the web:
http://www.retrosoftware.co.uk/wiki/ind ... UsefulDocs

So this might be a good reference ...

(I know Creative Assembler has already been taken care off).

Not at all! ;)

That would be an absolutely FANTASTIC gesture - and would no-doubt be of tremendous benefit to those coding new software for the Beeb (check out the Retro Software site for more info)

So .. go for it!!

Forgot to say I could host them for you at http://books.acornpreservation.org too (I'd also combine the scans into PDF downloads)

If you decide to go ahead with any scanning, please scan at 300dpi greyscale and save to [uncompressed] .png format. Ta! ;)

Ooh, if you don't want it, I'll happily give you a few quid for:

Creating Adventure Programs On The BBC Micro by Ian Watt

It's already available online, so there's no benefit from scanning it:

PM me if you're interested.

Sam.

I'll be happy to take 'How To Write Adventure Games by Peter Killworth' off of your hands.

Kind regards,

I obviously bought my copy off of eBay at the right time then. I think I paid about £8 or thereabouts for it.

In my opinion yes, but I think I'm in the minority there.

There are some other books I found in the same box, nothing much exciting - I'll put a full list up once I've gone through the rest of my BBC stuff at the weekend. I will scan at least something in, I'm a bit anal with that kind of stuff so unless I can get a good scan I won't bother (hence the question about taking the books apart).

I'll probably end up listing at least some of them on eBay, I don't like selling direct to people with things like this - I don't want to get ripped off and I don't want to rip anyone else off, so eBay is a good way for me to sell.

I don't think I've got much else of interest, except I did have a disk with some demo stuff direct from Gary Partis at one point - might be something interesting on that if I can find it. Plus an autographed copy of one of the Aardvark games, along with a note had written note from the man himself.

Does anyone know where I can get a scanned copy of Assembly Programming Made Easy For The BBC Micro by Ian Murray ?
I've just read a short article in the Micro User magazine and it definitely looks a good read.
