Birdstrike problems
Looking at the thread in the high score rounds, there were issues with corruption in Birdstrike by Firebird.
Did we find out if this happens in all copies of the game or just certain disc hacks?
Does the original uef version play OK or does this also corrupt?
Mick.

Re: Birdstrike problems
Mick, also check the previous game in the high-score challenge "Spectapede". This was also bugged but was fixed by JoolsH.

Hi Lee,
thanks for the reminder about Spectipede/Spectapede.
I have the fixed version and will re-post my disc002 over the coming weekend.

Mick.

Re: Birdstrike problems
Hi all,
ref the fault with Bird Strike during a high score, could someone who can get to the faulty part try the image below.
This is amended from Bill Carr's transfer and does not feature anything extra except for the new inlay instructions I have added.
regards,
Mick.

Re: Birdstrike problems
Hi Mick,
I've just tested this on my Beeb and the graphic glitches still appear, just the same as in the high score thread. I have the original game on cassette, but no tape player and cable, so I can't test it. I did start disassembling the game when we first found the bug, but must admit I haven't got far looking into it.

Sounds like a BITD bug in a budget title that no-one noticed BITD (or if they did notice, there was no internet to moan on!)

Re: Birdstrike problems
It could be a bug or it could be another emulator issue like Bug Blaster was!
Won't know for sure until an original copy is played on a real BBC B.

Isn't that what chrisn did?

Re: Birdstrike problems
I tested the disk that Mick posted here, not an original tape copy. I think it's unlikely to be an emulation issue though, as I've seen the game go wrong in exactly the same way on real hardware, as well as BeebEm and B-Em. But, it's worth testing to be certain...

Re: Birdstrike problems
Ah, I see - thanks for clearing that up for me.
I do have the original tape, so I can play on a real BBC ... but I'm not good enough to get to the point where things go wrong!

^yeah, stop moaning, for £1.99 BITD
here's the original just tested from my .WAV & .CSW file, i've taken out the unneeded extra space, so loads in 1:56 (so get the kettle on!). So just *T. CH."" on a real beeb, play the MP3 file out laptop/desktop at 25% volumeMick wrote:Won't know for sure until an original copy is played on a real BBC B.

Re: Birdstrike problems
Another option - can a good player get to just before the corruption starts in an emulator and use save state?
Then "we" end up with a machine in the state just before the game goes wrong - might give some clues?
Might be a daft idea, it popped up in my head, and then my fingers typed it!

^but free post
£1.99 /90.87 (RPI date Dec1984) X 257.5 (RPI Dec2014) = £5.64 worth in today's money!

Re: Birdstrike problems
Hi,
I can confirm that Col's MP3 (posted above) loads into a real beeb via a smartphone with no problems whatsoever
I just cannot get anywhere near the levels required to check if this bug exists on the real beeb with the original game.
Do we have any good Birdstrikers who can load the above MP3 into their phone or tablet/laptop or whatever and play it to the beeb?
You don't need any extra cabling, just plug the standard cassette lead from the beeb and stick the 'ear' jack into the phone's/laptop's headphone jack.
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was
Lee.

Re: Birdstrike problems
Turns out I'm terrible at this game.
Thanks! That poke seems to work perfectly in BeebEm, but when I tried it on a real Beeb via the Vine Micros Replay system, the results were... mixed:

(Apologies for the rubbish picture quality. Video posted more for amusement/ridicule than anything else.)

Change offset &1038 of the file BIRD?, ie &2238 to &60 (RTS) and you'll be immortal! [haven't tested it to death]

Re: Birdstrike problems
Okay, so I clearly don't understand how to use Replay...
I tried to undo the poke I'd made to the BirdStrike saved game, and somehow ended up causing the poke to work! I.e. I became invulnerable, and didn't keep randomly dying for no reason like before.
I was then able to confirm the following glitches, for what it's worth: This is all using the MP3 that Col uploaded above, played into an actual Beeb, the game then saved with Vine Micros Replay and then altered with BillCarr's poke.
I have to say I'm in awe of all you lot who managed to get this far in the game without an invulnerability cheat!
