Games that made use of Acorn Speech synthesiser

Post by aferenbach »

Hi all

Citing the one example i am aware of - when you complete Beach Head by US Gold then you get "you won" (technically U 1) from the speaker.

Has anyone else spotted games which use this upgrade?

NOTE - I do not mean Superior software's Speech! which featured in Repton 2 and Citadel.

Also do any current emulators do an emulation of this upgrade?

"DeathStar" is probably the most famous example.

As Kecske Bak says DeathStar (or Sinistar as I know it) is probably the most famous example.

Kind regards,

There was a several page article in "Personal Computer World" about the Acorn Speech Upgrade, that was published when it was first released, which included the whole phoneme list and included a lot of details technical details about it.

I remember that one. I used to have that article in a folder actually until my Dad got rid of all our BBC stuff. There were a lot of interesting and very probably now rare stuff in that folder covering various BBC magazine articles and instruction manuals. Since I've got back into the BBC I've been regretting getting rid of it. :(

Kind regards,

Yes, that's right. Like Bonecruncher, it was just a sample.

Seem to recall Kenneth muttering 'Press Return to Start' on the title screen for 'Wizzy's Mansion' ?!

Many moons ago, (last version dated 27th Dec 1983), I wrote a pants version of Cubert (which I called Herbert) which talked to you using the Acorn Speech System.

I could make it available for download if anyone wants a laff.

OK, download it from :

http://www.g7jjf.com/bbcprogs/herbert.zip

Please remember, it only runs on a BBC Model B, preferably with the speech interface fitted (or use BeebEm).

And it's only written in Basic, not super fast machine code, so don't expect anything brill.
