Re: Hello - Acorn hardware find
Great find! The Master will almost certainly work, but the battery used to store its settings will be flat and so initially it will look like its not working. Hold R during power up to reset the settings. The other two machines have PCB mounted batteries and so are at risk of corrosion. Even this is...

Unpredictable website issues on ancient hardware
This is totally off topic, but I'm posting on here because I know the readership is very well informed and helpful. It's very much not a criticism of the Stardot website, but Stardot is good example of the kind of website that is affected by the problem I'm experiencing. So... I have a very old Andr...

Thanks for the feedback! There's actually a later revision available, which will be in another thread somewhere, but I'll attach to the top post.

Re: A310 floppy drive alternatives
Same here. The thing about alignment though is that there's no way to adjust it, and also you'd think the drive would be able to read discs that it had formatted itself, even if misaligned. So this leads me back to the simple "not close enough" theory. I don't really know what I'm talking ...

Re: A310 floppy drive alternatives
This is like a self-help group, it's excellent! Would I be right in thinking that the copper-coloured spring plate simply holds the head down against the disc, and (within reason) doesn't need to be too precise provided that the head is actually kept in contact? If that's the case, is it possible to...

Re: A310 floppy drive alternatives
I’m in the same position myself, but similarly haven’t found an alternative. The real drives are very rare and so, it seems, is much documentation. It’s surprising how difficult it is to find old floppy drives.

That's interesting Ken, your keyboard housing is totally different to the one on this machine. I agree, yours looks rubbish! "My" one is a lot better, though not actually that great.

Excellent - I had found that thread previously but I forgot that it contained the full rom. I will point yrrah2 towards it.
I do have the disc image now but it seems only polite to let him premiere it!

Nice one. I was thinking of reflowing the solder joints anyway, but I will focus on the 0V line.

Dumping "AMX Design" rom (32k board with PAL)
I recently asked forum member Yrrah2 (owner of the website mybbcmaster.nl, a repository of a lot of excellent AMX mouse material) whether he could image the disk which goes with the CAD package AMX Design, because I have the ROM but apparently the disc is required as well. He has very kindly imaged ...

Re: BBC B (Viglen) with very strange keyboard-related issues
Switching keyboards was very easy... in fact I realised I could use the Viglen's stretchy umbilical and not even remove the keyboard from the other BBC. With alternative keyboard - problem goes away. With original keyboard... er... problem remains "gone away". This is going to be annoying!...

Re: BBC B (Viglen) with very strange keyboard-related issues
Yes I do, so I'll try that. I wasn't sure if the keyboard was necessarily relevant at all, but that would be a great way to rule it out. Also IC32 sounds worth investigating as well! I'm sure this is fixable, it's just a surprising last-minute problem (which of course only appeared after I'd screwed...

BBC B (Viglen) with very strange keyboard-related issues
I have recently repaired a Viglen BBC B, which had a couple of fairly straightforward faults: - System VIA was dead (new one fitted) - 2 DRAM chips dead - ATPL Sidewise board needed re-seating. Having done all this, the machine seemed to work fine, and I thought it was finished. However, on testing ...

This came with a very early-looking mouse with totally flat buttons and a Made in Switzerland label. Never seen one like that before.

Just had a go with the latest version. Individually, your refinements are not obvious to me, but taken together the sheer quality of the complete game really shines through. This is by far and away the best "classic arcade" type game on the Beeb I reckon.

Re: Hello from East Kilbride
Welcome!
I managed to recreate the E2P a few years ago, and its original creator John Wike joined this forum and made some amazing improvements to it. He also recreated the PMS product Hi Wordwise Plus, which appeared to be lost - so if you have a real copy of that, it would be really interesting.

Re: Acorn Electron Sound Expansion Cartridge re-created
That’s great, very impressive! Part of my motivation for recreating this was to see if the sound quality and/or the firmware were really as bad as some reviewers had said. I think we can now officially put those fears to rest. 🙂 It’s a pity the original designer, Mr Ingleby-Oddy hasn’t stopped by yet.

Re: Meteors++ (Enhanced Acornsoft Meteors for Acorn Electron)
I agree it's not really essential, but just a thought: could it perhaps be done by relocating all the code to sideways ram and executing it from there, at 2 MHz?0xC0DE wrote: A MODE 1 version will be excruciatingly slow on the Elk, not to mention nearly impossible to get it sprite flicker free...

Re: New: fully documented source code for Lander
This is brilliant! I have found your other game disassemblies really interesting and revealing, but in those cases I more or less understood the hardware of the underlying machine. Although I've had Archimedes machines since about 1990, I have never really had the same connection to the hardware and...

Re: Meteors++ (Enhanced Acornsoft Meteors for Acorn Electron)
That looks great! The funny thing is, I don't have much recollection of it being that bad. The main thing that stood out to me about Electron Meteors was the way it wasn't in colour (like the BBC version) or with a blue background (like on the box)!

Re: AMX Design
I have discovered a BBC micro which contains an original AMX Design rom. It's just possible that the disc for it exists within the box of stuff that was donated with this machine, so I'll look for it. Alternatively, I notice that on his excellent website mybbcmaster.nl, user yrrah2 says he has the d...

Re: BASIC Question: How do I turn off the cursor?
It's not simulating anything, it's *IMPLEMENTING* the VDU API. I might not have been as clear as I should have been - I was talking about the "VDU23;8202..." form of the command working on the Electron, not the API version (VDU23,1...). What I was attempting to do was precis what BeebWiki...

Re: BASIC Question: How do I turn off the cursor?
It will work as a line on its own. The only requirement is that it has to be after the mode change, as MODE always turns the cursor back on.
