Re: High Score Challenge - S22 - Round 9 - Uncle Claude
I see that 11 is the last level and you collect BBC Model Bs, so maybe it only works if it's running on one :D You are correct on both counts - the game wraps around for level 12 - but how were you able to determine those two facts? electro.jpg It turns out that the alt version of this game - Elect...

Re: High Score Challenge - S22 - Round 9 - Uncle Claude
I just played through the tape version from The Stairway - using save states - and the exact same thing happens. Could this be The Beeb's answer to Pac Man level 256? Somewhere I have a disc image (from my own collection) where I copied my original tape over onto disc but I imagine that will d...

Re: High Score Challenge - S22 - Round 8 - Microbe
You can use the shift key to fire too in this game. That's what I'm doing. Thank the 8-bit deities for that concession! Thought I was going to have to remap some emulator keys - although I can't say I really used up and down all that much. Had this one BITD and always loved the noise, colour and th...

Re: 30th Anniversary BBC and Electron Collection
And will there be a 10th Anniversary Collection of the collection next month?
Or does it update to become the "40th Anniversary Collection"?
Hope I've not spoiled any intended surprises!

Aye, but an equivalent would be spotting some old stereo equipment and expecting the shop staff to know the ins and outs of thermionic valves

Re: Hex Islands (working title)
It was a board game called Escape From Colditz that started it for me. Hexagons are certainly closer to circles for range of movement purposes. They are also just a bit more interesting to look at than squares for me. Never played that one, but I have fond memories of Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs a...

Re: Ghostbusters
Great to finally read the instructions  It's been fabulous to watch this one come together, and the enhanced version is the icing on the cake. Hadn't actually seen the NuLA in action before but this prompted me to grab an emulator that supported it :D after playing this for a bit (and loving it...

Astonishing! Really enjoyed scooting around at 5x emulator speed and, with less distance displayed, it actually runs ok in real time

Re: Hex Islands (working title)
I noticed that the cursor was white, otherwise I'd have guessed MODE 4 also. :-) I assumed that was why you'd drawn that conclusion and actually had to go check the native behaviour - as I was confused why the > prompt was green but the cursor line was white. It surprised me too, but I found that t...

Re: Hex Islands (working title)
Already looking promising, and visually distinctive compared to other beeb games. Mode 1 for the win. I assumed it was monochrome MODE 4. Gives a lot more memory to play with and, based on the look of that screenshot, no other colours are required :) My first assumption was a tactics or advance war...

Re: High Score Challenge - S22 - Round 7 - Challenger
This could've been a much better game if it wasn't spoilt by the inconsistent control system. It's definitely got something to it and one can't help but wonder what a more professionally coded version would've been like. I did have a few goes last week but, as with everyone else, I didn't really ge...

Re: Retro Adventurers Podcast
Haven't listened to the show, as it's not of huge appeal to me, but I will just throw my 2p in and comment on what Vexy said. ...the first 70 minutes... I see the initial episode is around 1hr45. Personally - and this may just be me - I prefer podcasts that are a bit shorter. If you're going to stre...

Re: More Boulder Dash!
Yes indeed, Raspberry and I have been having a lot of back and forth and labouring away behind the scenes. For one thing we've both now created 3 new sprites sets each . On my end I've updated both my cave and sprite editors. Changes are: Cave editor: Added all the parameters for level randomisation...

Re: Disabling Firetrack auto-fire?
I wonder if the OP wants to try to play without any weapons firing, or wants to modify the game so that a key has to be pressed to fire? NOP-ing out the fire routine would suit the former, checking some key for being held would suit the latter. Ha, yes, disabling fire entirely might be considered o...

Re: Disabling Firetrack auto-fire?
I guess I could get disassembling if only I had the time! Meant to say that Level 7 have saved you the trouble. You'll find such a disassembly here: https://www.level7.org.uk/miscellany/firetrack-disassembly.txt The fire routine (which presumably just needs NOP-ing out) is found at &29C2 :)

Re: Disabling Firetrack auto-fire?
You can't, it's part of the game. It's loosely based on the arcade game Star Force which also has auto-fire. Auto-fire is being used to describe two completely different behaviours here. As it's traditionally defined, yes, Star Force - and many other games - have it. That being the ability to hold ...

Did you simply try dropping PAGE a bit?
The (flawed) bbcmicro.co.uk version seems to run with it at &1500 but the later version that you posted doesn't.

Bit of a boost, I got stuck on a level where the snake was kind of trapped along the botton and left side and I couldn't get down far enough to pick the segments off until it start working it's way back up to get me. Had something similar - centipede segments walled in over on the left in a way tha...

Is it just my imagination, or does the stardot forum emblem indicate that *. actually looks like the orbitals/nucleus/ Proton of an Atom with an Electon whizzing around it?... ;) (The Beeb was originally called the "Proton"...???) Hahaha, that's a very creative interpretation which manage...

Eitherway, thanks for resurrecting the thread, as I'd never stumbled across this gem of a game before
Was fascinating to read about the history of it - and also the trials and tribulations involved in its archival!

Re: Pirate "Compilation Games Disks" from the 1980s
I was wondering if anyone has any .SSD / .DSD files of original dodgy 1980s compilation games disks? I'm giving a talk/video on video game cheating and disability, and would love to get an original or two to grab a screen shot from. Looks like an innocent question, but maybe this is how the Federat...
