Re: Old Usbourne books, free PDFs from Usbourne!

I got Island of Secrets and Write Your Own Adventure Games this morning ... but it looks like the URLs have been switched to be Google Drive links ... so hopefully they should all be available again.

There was a period when they 404ing this afternoon though.

Re: Old Usbourne books, free PDFs from Usbourne!

Dave E at Acorn Electron World has done a marvellous job of getting Island of Secrets and many of the others working... but I don't think the game itself quite lived up to my tween imagination. :)

Re: Old Usbourne books, free PDFs from Usbourne!

I remember massively enhancing some of the programs from Computer Spy Games and Computer Space Games. :)

Never did manage to get Island of Secrets and the game from How To Write Fantasy Games working properly, though ...

All, I'm locking this topic. We all know that there is a tonne of bad feeling and name-calling which goes on over many of the unmoderated Acorn communities - newsgroups, mailing lists, websites etc. This place is intended as a haven from such things. It's one thing to post a friendly warning about d...

I'm seeing a consistent theme... I also want to encourage other users to throw their 2p's worth in here if they have an opinion, even if it is just to repeat what others are saying. That way, we can be sure it's not a minority view. Ta!

Hi both. All the features are definitely still there - they just may be squirrelled away somewhere. This topic would be a good place to collate feedback on the theme. Specifically, do people think this one needs any tweaking? - for example, we could experiment with increasing the font size, if peopl...

Unexpected downtime, spam emails, server/forum upgrade & mea culpa

Hi, all. You may (OK, will) have noticed that we were offline over the last 36 hours. Without sugar-coating it, the forum database was compromised. The upshot of which is that the contents of the database user table was stolen, resulting in everyone's username, email address and hashed password bein...

Would it be churlish to suggest that people should read the entire mailing list thread to find John's view of this site and its members before ordering? Hopefully this suggestion isn't inflammatory! It would be a bit churlish. ;) His projects should stand on their own merits, and I'm sure he'd be a...

Multiple / fake accounts, forum etiquette

Hi, Forum members are reminded that we require people not to hide behind multiple or fake account names . It is not fair on the rest of our community to knowingly misrepresent yourself as someone else. This is one of the few things that may regrettably lead us to require a forum member to leave. The...

Great. If anyone prefers 1024MAK's suggestions, please vote for other and leave a comment which says which of his colours you prefer. Yes, it was a suggestion in the first post - I updated the post and highlighted the colour bit earlier. Just to give an indication of who was willing & able to travel to a meet and who probably wasn't likely to attend, even if it was fairly close to home.

Definitely agree on good post etiquette. I think quoting is only really necessary when you're trying to reply to a large number of individual points or where you are replying to a post that is much earlier in the topic. Even then, the quotation should be sparing - just enough to provide context. Rep...

Alright, I've wasted some time fiddling and I think I've been able to update the URL in the first post with a view that will start with the focus on a zoomed out view of Great Britain. Yep, as what they said. Messages move from your Outbox to Sent Items when the recipient has actually logged in to the system and read them. This sometimes doesn't happen for ages if the recipient isn't ready to reply, because they will have often read the message already as it is included in the PM ...
